What is Angina Heart Disease?

Angina is a squeezing pain or a pressing feeling in the chest like an elephant is sitting on your chest. It is most often caused by blockages in the arteries that supply blood to your heart This is called coronary artery disease, or heart disease.

If you experience either of these symptoms please call your doctor right away.
The symptoms you describe to your doctor will help your doctor decide if you need to be tested for heart disease. Your doctor will also check for any conditions that can increase your chance of heart disease.

Your doctor will be looking for:

  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • smoking
  • high cholesterol level
  • menopause in women
  • family members who have had heart disease at a young ag

How do you know if you have angina?  There are two types of angina:

  • Stable angina that comes on with a certain level of activity and goes away easily. You may have or had encountered this for a long time.
  • Unstable angina that have different warning signs like, doing something physical and getting out of breath, more episodes of angina with less exertion, angina that comes on while resting.
