Calcium, Women and Heart Disease

Research has shown that women taking calcium for improved bone health may also be at a lower risk for heart disease. However, there is also recent research that shows that in women that were post menopausal the rate of heart attacks increase with high dosages of calcium to prevent bone loss.

The study, which was conducted in 2008 has been downplayed by some researchers stating the need for more in depth study on the effects of calcium in more mature women as the study that was done focused on bone loss and not on heart disease. Due to the fact that this study is not being considered significant proof that higher dosages of calcium increases the risk of heart disease in women the current recommended dosage has not been changed.

It is recommended that mature women that are post menopausal consult their physician to determine what dosage of calcium is best.
