What Is Coronary Heart Disease?

Coronary Heart Disease is the failure of the blood supply the heart muscle and surrounding tissue. It is the most common form of disease affecting the heart and an important cause of premature death.

Coronary Heart disease is also associated with atherosclerotic coronary artery disease, but coronary disease can be due to other causes, such as coronary vasospasm.

Coronary vasospasm is a form of vasospasm affecting the blood flow to the heart. When there is no blood flow to the heart it can cause a myocardial bridge. This occurs when the one of the coronary arteries tunnels through the myocardium rather than resting on top of it. The arteries rest on top of the heart muscle and feed blood down into smaller vessels that populate throughout the myocardium. But if the muscle grows around one of the larger arteries, then a myocardial bridge is formed. As the heart squeezes to pump blood, the muscle exerts pressure across the bridge and constricts the artery.

This defect is usually present from birth. It can lead to uncomfortable, powerful heartbeats and angina.

The condition is diagnosed on a basis’s of what percentage of obstruction occurs. If there is atleast 70% it can cause a lot of pain.
