What Are Some Distinctive Ways That Heart Disease Affects Women?

Did you know that more women die from heart disease than any type of cancer?

The sad part about all of this is that other than the genetic part of heart disease; this could be avoided. We all know that we can’t do much about our genetic makeup, so let’s leave the genetics out of this discussion and move on to what we can do.

Men usually get heart disease from atherosclerosis, plaque buildup. Women on the other hand are a totally different story. Women get what is called coronary microvascular disease. This is known as the heart's smallest arteries, spreading out evenly along artery walls.

Doctors use a test called an angiogram. When women have this test half of these results come back normal. But these women are still dying from heart disease or a stroke. Coronary microvascular disease is not always detected with an angiogram.

A woman’s symptoms to heart disease are not the same as men. Women are less likely to experience a sudden, crushing chest pain that most men get while having a heart attack. Women are more likely to have persistent low-level discomfort in the shoulders, neck or abdomen. They may also experience unexplained general fatigue and shortness of breath.
