What is Kawasaki Disease? |
What is Kawasaki Disease, this is an illness that is named after the physician that first identified it and is a condition that causes inflammation in the walls of the small and medium sized arteries. This inflammation is contained throughout the body and includes the coronary arteries. What this means is that the inflamed arteries can make it difficult for the heart to pump blood. Another name for this illness is mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome, as it also affects the lymph nodes and the mucus membranes. Which means it can affect the mouth, nose and throat, and there are symptoms such as high fever and peeling skin. This may sound as if it is a severe illness, when in most cases it can be treated in children without serious problems, although it can be alarming for parents. The high fever is normally present for over four days and should be treated by a physician.
