Newborns are most susceptible to inflicting congenital heart diseases at the time of birth. According to several reports, heart related birth defects affect about eight in every 1,000 newborns. In fact, congenital heart defects are one of the most significant causes that lead to a delayed growth among children. These conditions lead to abnormalities in structure of the vessels, valves or chambers of the heart.

There are over 30 different types of congenital heart defects observed among children. However, they are categorized into two main types called, cyanotic heart disease and acyanotic disease. Cyanotic heart diseases occur when the presence of oxygen in not enough in the blood. Babies born with this disease have blue colored limbs which strongly indicate the lack of oxygen. Such infants also experience other problems like breathlessness, fainting and fatigue.

In Acyanotic diseases, the blood is not normally pumped throughout the body.  Children born with this disease have high blood pressure as the heart is forced to pump very hard to reach adequate blood through the body parts. Symptoms associated with this disease are breathlessness, fatigue, dizziness and fainting.  Such children suffer from the problems of pulmonary hypertension as the pressure of the blood becomes extremely high around the lungs.
