What is Ventricular Tachycardia?

Ventricular tachycardia can be defined as the rapid heartbeat that starts in the ventricles. This condition is life threatening and can lead to conditions such as ventricular fibrillation and sudden death. Ventricular tachycardia also has various classification based on its morphology.

Ventricular tachycardia may be thought of as a sequence of consecutive ventricular premature beats. Sometimes only a few such beats occur together, and then the heart returns to a normal rhythm. Ventricular tachycardia is normally an inherited medical condition.

There are two types of Ventricular tachycardia namely monomorphic tachycardia and polymorphic tachycardia. Ventricular tachycardia that lasts more than 30 seconds is called sustained ventricular tachycardia. Ventricular tachycardia is most commonly associated with heart attacks or scarring of the heart muscle from a previous heart attack. Sustained ventricular tachycardia usually occurs in people with a structural heart disorder that has damaged the ventricles.
