You would be surprised to know that sometimes, different viruses can be the cause of heart disease. For instance, new research shows that the virus cytomegalovirus (CMV), which is present in most people of 40 years old, is spread through bodily fluids, and manifests the symptoms in those who have weakened immune systems, like transplant patients. This could results in high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries, which would lead to stroke, kidney disease and heart disease.
The virus usually lies dormant in most people, but those who think they have been infected with CMV, can get a blood test done. CMV infection, when combined with a high cholesterol diet, can lead to stiffening of the arteries – which increases a person’s risk of stroke. Some cases of cardiovascular disease and hypertension can be treated either with a vaccine or with antiviral drugs. CMV infection has also believed to be linked with restenosis in cardiac transplant patients, where the heart’s arteries ‘reblock’.
Viruses are known to cause many different types of heart disease, but something as simple as antiviral medication could do the trick. Research suggests that this alone could prevent cardiovascular disease in many people around the world. |
